Abdomen
The most commonly used site for self-injection, generally a couple of inches from the navel, rotating between left and right sides and different zones within each. Easy to reach and see clearly, which makes it a common first choice for people new to self-injecting.
What to watch for
Enough subcutaneous fat at the chosen spot to avoid an accidental intramuscular injection, especially relevant for anyone with a leaner build.
Thighs
The front or outer thigh is another commonly used site, also easy to reach for self-injection. Some people alternate between abdomen and thigh across a rotation cycle rather than sticking to one area exclusively.
A note on love handles
The area sometimes called love handles, the sides of the lower torso, is used by some people as an additional rotation site, though it’s less universally discussed in official guidance than the abdomen and thighs.
Upper arms and glutes
The back of the upper arm is used, though it’s harder to reach alone and sometimes requires help. The glutes are used by some as well, similarly requiring more reach or assistance than the abdomen or thigh.
Choosing a personal rotation
There’s no single “best” site among these; what matters is having two or three reachable sites you can genuinely rotate between consistently, logged each week, rather than picking the theoretically ideal site and then not actually varying it.
